The Unabombers - Live in Rome mix (November 2011)

Office parties never go to plan, it's either an untethered release of anarchic joy and lust or one big moan/rant to a soundtrack you'd never choose. Well here at The Beat we aim to improve things where we can and therefore we suggest slipping this on the soundsystem and dancing like you would 10 years previous. Big up the Unabombers, the lovely Manc party crafters that they are.

John Forde - Stardance (Extended Version)

Here be cosmic disco of the most literal variety. John Forde's 1977 ode to interstellar love is a remarkable piece of work - it's spectral sound uses deep, bubbling 303 sounds a good 5-years before the 303 was even invented!

John Forde - Stardance (Extended Version)

Rickster - Night Moves (Night House mix)

We're dining at house music's top table here, released in 1988 'Night Moves' was mixed by the legendary Steve 'Silk' Hurley - that's Mr.Jack Your Body kids. So this really is an apple pie moment, pure perfection.

Lola – Wax The Van (Junior's Awesome Edit)

'Wax the Van' was written by the late great Arthur Russell, but this is the 1987 edit by Mr.Ego himself, Junior Vasquez. It's especially good for both their input. Put it on and repeat, repeat, repeat.

Gettovetts feat Rammellzee - Gangster Lean

Rammellzee is the real deal; musician and all-round artistic visionary. This 12" single released in the same year as the 2 Much single below, 1988, is testament to his talent and the pioneering edge to hip-hop at the time.

2 Much - Wild Thang

We don't post much hip-hop nowadays, but this track was on my mind and deserves a post for the Grace Jones sample, the lazy (lazy meaning good) delivery and the er... climax.

Sad Lovers and Giants - Things We Never Did

English alternative band Sad Lovers and Giants hail from the glamour of Watford, maybe that might explain the slant of this 1981 track 'Things We Never Did', taken from the LP 'Epic Garden Music'.

Amon Düül II - No Sushi For Camels

Amon Düül II are a German rock band that was born out of the radical West German commune scene of the sixties. Responsible for laying the foundations of the Krautrock scene, the track 'No Sushi For Camels' is taken from the reissue of their twelfth album 'Only Human' originally released in 1979, all the tracks of which are as wonderfully genre bending as this.

Here's an old favourite of mine, the man the myth, DJ Harvey providing an Essential Mix back in 1998. It's a good few years old, but there's no stagnant filler rather two hours that prove the man's worth in full. Pull back the sofa and tear it up.

Beat Djs - Live In Sheffield

A few years back we were asked to venture up to steel city to dj a techno loving friend's birthday party. We hastily threw together a set we thought would sound great played on a massive pa in a sweaty club under the cinema and here it is. No idea why the mp3 has taken this long to surface but it gives a good impression of what a beat dj set is like. Mixing ain't great (we were quite drunk) but it's full of attitude and that's what really counts.

Tracklist:

  1. Mugwump - Everything Remains
  2. Plastique De Reve - Lost In The City (40 Thieves Dub)
  3. My Mine - Hypnotic Tango (Dub Version)
  4. Adonis - No Way Back

  15. Mayer/Voigt - Trasparenza

Miles Hollway & Elliot Eastwick - Hard Times Boxed mix pt1 & pt2

Theme, we're on a theme... after the Back to Basics mix, a club of unprecedented importance in my life, here's another pinnacle of North of England club history - Hard Times. From it's origins in Mirfield (opening in 1993) it existed in a number of places in and around Yorkshire, pulling in many of the more refined US DJs, but the highlight for me were original residents Miles Hollway and Elliot Eastwick (along with Jason Boardman and Nigel Lee). Here's a two part mix from 1996 full of that premium house sound.
